An Complete Overview on Highly ranked
Neville had never designed a course before, but with the help of Douglas Grant -who did the bunkering - he fashioned one of the world's finest championship tests. The present course has recently been rated second in the world, behind only Pine Valley, by a panel of US golf writers and players.
Jack Nicklaus - a consistent winner here - said of the course, 'If I had only one more round of golf to play, I would choose to play it at Pebble Beach. My hat is off to the two men who designed Pebble - they did everything right. After all these years with no major revisions Pebble Beach still stands up. It's a superb championship test.'
The inland holes burst through cypresses, oaks, eucalyptus and pines and are fine holes in their own right. But the course wouldn't be the classic it is without the holes perched on top of the cliffs. Over the years Pebble has drawn varying comments from those who have challenged it, but no golfer goes away with hatred in his heart.
It's a hospitable course through the first five holes, and gives no hint of the terrors to come. Lee Trevino once quipped with the gallery as he stood on the forbidding 6th tee, ‘if you’re 5 over when you hit this tee it's the best place in the world to commit suicide.' Trevino knew that ahead of him lay the toughest four hole sequence in golf.
