Complete Just rewards Guide
When the wind blows, the 6957 yard championship course is a stern test. The first day of the 1986 Open was one of the coldest and windiest of modern times. Ian Woosnam was the only player to match the par of 70, and over 40 players could not break 80. But whatever the weather the course rewards good play.
Scoring at times has been brilliant. Turnberry staged its first Open in 1977 and records were shattered. American Mark Hayes shot an amazing 63, which was equalled by Greg Norman in 1986. And Tom Watson, the '77 winner, set a 72 hole record of 12 under par 268. These three records still stand.
Greg Norman's round was remarkable in that it contained three bogies, and was played in testing conditions. It is arguably the best round ever played in any championship, and set Norman up for his first win in a major.
