One of the greatest courses in the world, Pebble is awesome.Located south of San Fransisco,it hugs the rocky Californian coastline and is a monstrous challenge in a high wind.
Deceptive in the early holes, Pebble Beach gives the impression that it's easily conquered. But any golfer who believes that is in for a long day. This links course is set so hard against the Pacific Ocean that the waves crash on to the cliffs just paces away from some of the fairways and greens.
Eight holes run beside the ocean, which is very much in play. Bluffs and cliffs dominate the right side going out, and they reappear at the finish for the 17th and 18th. Any waywardness is severely punished as the ball plummets down the rocks and is swallowed up by the swirling waters.
Pebble is a public course that anyone can play at a price, but it plays no favourites. You need long, accurate striking, hard concentration and shots of often Herculean proportions to succeed on this masterpiece.
The course was the brainchild of Samuel Morse - a relative of the telegraph inventor - back in 1919. His dream was to create a course on his land fronting Carmel Bay and the ocean. He hired Jack Neville - a Californian amateur champion and Walker Cup international - as his architect.
