A Popular tournament venue
The various reconstructions over the years have developed the dunes to form natural viewing points for spectators. Birkdale is also popular with tournament organizers. Not only is its on-course viewing better than most, but Birkdale can also take huge crowds and is not far from Southport - with many hotels.
Since the Second World War it has staged more championships than any other British course. Although Birkdale did not host an Open Championship until the 1950s, the Ladies' Golf Union recognized its potential as early as 1909, when it staged their Amateur Championship.
