Royal Birkdale Hole by hole

Championship tees: 7022 yards, par 71. Medal tees 6711 yards. Standard Scratch Score (SSS) 73, Men's Tees: white 6703 yards, SSS 73; yellow 6305 yards, SSS 71.Ladies' Tees: 5777 yards, SSS 75.

1st hole
(Champ 450yd Medal 447yd Par 4) Don't go too far right from the tee or you're out of bounds.

2nd hole
(Champ 419yd Medal 416yd Par 4) Don't be long with your second shot because danger lurks just beyond the green.

3rd hole
(Champ 411yd Medal 407yd Par 4) Take one more club than you think for your second.

4th hole
(Champ 205yd Medal 202yd Par 3) You usually have to allow for the left-to-right wind - and you can't feel it from the tee.

5th hole
(Champ 348yd Medal 341yd Par 4) Don't be tempted to cut the corner of the fairway from the tee or you could end up in the pond.

6th hole
(Champ 492yd Medal 488yd Par 5) Play left from the tee for the best approach to the green.

7th hole
(Champ 156yd Medal 150yd Par 3) Check for wind strength, because the plateau tee is surprisingly sheltered.

8th hole
(Champ 460yd Medal 414yd Par 4) Stay clear of the dunes on the left and don't be short with your second.

9th hole
(Champ 416yd Medal 413yd Par 4) You can't see the fairway off the back tee. It's better to be right.

10th hole
(Champ 397yd Medal 372yd Par 4) Don't be tempted to play left. The scrub is extremely thick on this side.

11th hole
(Champ 411yd Medal 374yd Par 4) Play down the left for the best approach to the green - but it is also the most dangerous side.

12th hole
(Champ 186yd Medal 181yd Par 3) Don't overhit the green because of the surrounding sand dunes.

13th hole
(Champ 508yd Medal 436yd Par 5) Beware of the long winding ditch down the left.

14th hole
(Champ 201yd Medal 198yd Par 3) Watch out for the slope on this large green or you may three putt.

15th hole
(Champ 545yd Medal 542yd Par 5) Beware of bunkers that are ready to catch your ball on tee shots.

16th hole
(Champ 416yd Medal 344yd Par 4) Play down the left from the tee for the best line at this hole.

17th hole
(Champ 527yd Medal 502yd Par 5) You mustn't hook your tee shot on this extremely tight driving hole.

18th hole
(Champ 474yd Medal 476yd Par 4) Your second shot is probably one more club than you think.
