Detailed about Sunningdale Four holes to watch
7th hole (Champ 409yd Par 4) Like many at Sunningdale this hole calls for accuracy rather than power. The fairway is completely hidden by a ridge in front of the tee. Driving down the right leaves the best line into the gently sloping green.
Take care with your alignment on the second shot - the fairway slopes from right to left and you're usually left with an awkward hanging lie. You should favour the right half of the green as slopes gather the ball in, and there are bunkers left.
12th hole (Champ 451yd Par 4) The tee shot has to go through a narrow gap between bunkers as there is plenty of trouble should you miss the fairway. The green is set off to the left on raised ground beyond a nest of five bunkers which intimidate your second shot.
You normally have to play a long iron approach over sand to the green. Trees crowding in from the left and a steep bank which drops away on the right protect the putting surface.
14th hole (Champ 509yd Par 5) There is ample room for the tee shot but from that point on the hole becomes increasingly difficult. A diagonal string of bunkers across the fairway - a trademark of Willie Park jnr - plays havoc with short hitters or anyone in trouble from the tee.
From a long drive these bunkers pose no problems, but beware of a further three up near the green over the brow of a hill. If in doubt play short and leave yourself a pitch into the green.
18th hole (Champ 429yd Par 4) This fine finishing hole climbs gently uphill towards the imposing clubhouse. You need an accurate drive to fire between the two fairway bunkers. Knocking the ball into one of the traps leaves you a difficult decision of whether or not to go for the carry over cross bunkers just short of the green.
The usual second shot is deceptive because you can't see the bottom of the pin. The best way in is to aim for the right of the huge oak tree as the green slopes from the left.
