All about Three homes
The course is owned by the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Gentlemen. The exact date of the club's formation is generally accepted to be 1744 - it's reckoned to be the world's oldest golf club.
In its early days the Honourable Gentlemen played over the 5-hole Leith Links. But the course and its facilities became so congested with other clubs and societies that the Honourable Gentlemen moved to Musselburgh. When in 1891 Musselburgh also became overcrowded the club bought land further east, at Muirfield, 18 miles from Edinburgh.
Although former British Open Champion Tom Morris snr was credited with the imaginative design of the course, most of the planning and building was the result of a collection of minds. A number of structural changes were made in the 1920s but the basic layout remains the same.
