All about Turnberry Four holes to watch

6th hole - Tappie Tourie
(Champ 222yd Par 3) This is an all or nothing tee shot but at least there isn't the ultimate disaster of water if you're short. For the good hitter it can play as little as a 5 iron with a strong breeze at your back. With wind against it's everything you've got, and more.

Because the green is set at the top of a rise, there's no chance of a shot running on to it. A short ball topples back down the slope. If you go left you can end up in one of three traps. Go right and your ball bounces down a big bank.

9th hole - Bruce's Castle
(Champ 455yd Par 4) This is the most photographed tee shot in British golf. You must fire over a craggy shore towards a stone cairn and the blind fairway beyond. The fairway is hogbacked so even a good shot tends to fall away to either side into semi-rough.

If you do find the rough, your long second shot is far more difficult. Though the green is not protected by bunkers, the ground falls away quite sharply to either side and a hump at the front on the right diverts many balls into the rough.

10th hole -Dinna Fouter
(Champ 452yd Par 4) The prospect which lies before you on the tee is every bit as dramatic as on the 9th - but this time you can see all of the hole before you. Humpy ground in front of the tee catches any really poor shot, while a hook almost certainly lands among the rocks on the left.

Safety suggests a tee shot along the right but the rough is often severe. The green isn't heavily protected, but a large circular island bunker set 50yd (45m) short catches the miss-hit second.

16th hole - Wee Burn
(Champ 409yd Par 4) On the face of it this isn't a demanding hole - a par 4 of just over 400yd (364m) and a gently sloping fairway to give you a little extra run. But the lone bunker on the left of the fairway catches plenty of tee shots.

The most difficult feature is Wilson's Burn which runs in front and to the right of the green. The ground gathers your ball in towards the burn, and it catches most miss-hit or under clubbed second shots.
