The course was created in 1900 by Willie Park jnr and has been altered only slightly since. Park combined the classic features of established courses with his own ideas, to develop a unique style for inland golf.
Up to that time all the great courses were on linksland, and inland golf-often no more than playing over a series of fields - was something of a joke. But Park changed all that by setting totally new standards of playing quality and beauty.
Many of the game's greats have walked the famous fairways. A regular venue for amateur and professional tournaments, it was entirely fitting that Sunningdale was chosen as the first non links course to stage the Walker Cup in 1987. The Old Course is now ranked as the top inland layout in the British Isles.
Sunningdale also stages its own unusual tournament at the start of every season - the Sunningdale Foursomes. Both amateurs and professionals, men and women battle it out off fixed handicaps, trying to win this prestigious title that has been going for over 50 years.
The club has two courses - the Old and the tougher New - just like its well known neighbors Wentworth and the Berkshire. Sunningdale is one of the most famous clubs in the world, and both courses are superb. But it's the Old that has become the blueprint for hundreds of heathland courses all over the globe.
