A Valderrama Four holes to watch
4th hole (Champ 515m Par 5) This is one of the most beautiful holes on the course. Aim from the tee to avoid the bunker on the left side of the fairway just short of the landing area. From there you can see the green.
Your next shot should reach a second rise on the right, setting up a pitch over the water hazard to a three-tiered green. It can be a very tough hole when the local Poniente wind from the mountains is blowing.
5th hole (Champ 344m Par 4) This heavily bunkered hole requires two accurate shots to hit the green. Stay slightly right off the tee because the two bunkers on the left are in range. But be careful not to go too far right as there are bunkers which can be reached by long hitters on that side.
The green is protected by an overhanging cork tree on the right and by four tricky bunkers. Play your second to the left side of the green to avoid too much trouble.
11th hole (Champ 504m Par 5) Drive the ball down the left side, to hold a fairway that has a natural left-to-right fall. Make sure you play a precise second shot - the landing area is small because of bunkers on both sides of the fairway.
From here you see the flag on the skyline. Your third must be played between two bunkers that guard the hole. From the green you get great views of the Rock of Gibraltar, the sea and the mountains.
16th hole (Champ 385m Par 4) The tee shot is blind on this very tough dog-leg. Hit to the crest of the hill and on to a narrow landing area which slopes from right to left. Only then do you see the green, with its king-size bunker on the left and a lesser trap on the right.
The green is strongly influenced by a diagonal ridge, and can be very tricky to putt on. It is part of the long and difficult finish to the championship course.
