An Review on Winds of change
For a course built in 1891, Muirfield has an unusual - and modern - layout. The first nine holes form a clockwise circle, outside the back nine which run in an anti-clockwise direction.
This means that the wind at Muirfield never blows at the same angle for long, so great concentration and skill are demanded of the players.
The 9th green is near the 1st tee, unlike many links where the 9th is at the furthest point from the clubhouse.
The course is also further from the sea than most championship links - but still has a wonderful view of the Firth of Forth and the distant Kingdom of Fife hills.
